American Fantasy

Entry updated 19 February 2024. Tagged: Publication.

US letter-size saddle-stapled weird fiction magazine. Publishers: Nancy and Robert Garcia. Editor: Robert Garcia (series one); Robert and Nancy Garcia (series two). Five issues, May 1982 to Winter 1988. Publication was roughly quarterly.

This well-produced Semiprozine had two incarnations, the first comprising two quarterly issues in 1982 with critical material on Fantasy and Horror fiction, with some coverage of Cinema. A long Interview with Peter Straub appeared in #1 (February 1982). American Fantasy suspended publication after #2 (May 1982) and did not reappear until its relaunch with a new #1 dated Fall 1986. The second series contained a wider variety of material, including fiction from Lois McMaster Bujold, Andrew M Greeley, Mercedes Lackey and Tanith Lee. There were interviews with Ramsey Campbell, Alan Moore and Gene Wolfe, many book reviews by Charles L Grant and others, and occasional film coverage. Much criticism of horror fiction appeared, dealing with Hugh B Cave, Fritz Leiber, Manly Wade Wellman and many more. The magazine seemed unable to obtain sufficient distribution. Robert Garcia remains active within the field with his American Fantasy Publishing. [GSt/DRL]
