British Fantasy Society

Entry updated 26 July 2015. Tagged: Community.

1. The first British Fantasy Society was sf-based and operated from 1942 to 1946. It was a precursor of the British Science Fiction Association founded in 1958: see this entry for further details. The Society's British Fantasy Society Bulletin (which see) was circulated with Futurian War Digest.

2. The present British Fantasy Society was formed in 1971, initially as the British Weird Fantasy Society, for "all devotees of fantasy, horror, and the supernatural". Often perceived in the past as catering principally if not exclusively for horror fans, this active society – which sponsors an annual Convention, Fantasycon (1975-current) – has little direct relevance to sf other than a substantial crossover of membership with sf groups. The current society's British Fantasy Awards have been presented for fantasy and horror since 1971. [PR/DRL]
