Chambers, John

(1922-2001) US makeup artist and medical technician. Chambers first began to learn such techniques performing reconstructive surgery and designing prosthetic limbs for wounded soldiers while serving in World War Two. Chambers is of most importance to sf for his work on the Alien race the Vulcans featured on the original Star Trek (1966-1969) Television series – for which he moulded Spock's famously pointed ears – and as principal designer of the ape makeup for Planet of the Apes (1968) and its sequels. In 1969 he received an honorary Academy Award (Oscar) for these ape designs, long before the 1981 introduction of a specific award category for Best Makeup. Some further genre credits are Ssssssss! (1973), Embryo (1976), and the television series The Outer Limits (1963-1965) and Beyond Westworld (1980). [GSt]
