(1950- ) German author whose sf novel, Die Beschattung (1989; trans Breon Mitchell as Shadowlife 1991), is set in a Near Future world where life has been radically undermined by an environmental cataclysm (see Ecology); the protagonist of the sparsely eloquent tale works in the Central Institute for Biographics, which is dedicated to sustaining something like human life, if only in the form of copies, a goal whose implications are sufficiently dark to turn him to sedition. The novel itself gradually expands from a scrutiny of the nature of a Dystopia, whose welfare initiatives have become greyly peremptory, into a modernist (see Modernism in SF) quest for an underlying reality within these signs of cultural distress.
