Ignotus Award

Entry updated 4 July 2022. Tagged: Award.

The annual Award, similar in scope to the Hugo, presented by the Spanish Fantasy, Science Fiction and Horror Association during the Spanish Fantasy, Science Fiction and Horror Convention known as HispaCon. These awards were established in 1991, and are named in honour of Coronel Ignotus, one of the pioneering sf authors in Spain (which see). The voting system consists of two phases: election of finalists and voting; to take part in them it is necessary only to sign up for a census managed by the administrator.

Over time, the awards' official rules have had several updates, increasing the number of categories. Currently there are fifteen categories: Novel (narrative work of more than 40,000 words), Novella (between 17,500 and 40,000 words), Short Story (less than 17,500 words), Anthology, Book-length Nonfiction, Article, Illustration, Audiovisual Production, Comic, Poetry, Magazine, Foreign Novel, Foreign Story, Website and Book for Children or Young Adult. In addition, the board of trustees has the power to create an additional category (such as the retroIgnotus to honour past work, as with the Retro Hugo) or to present the Gabriel Award, which recognizes a valuable career contribution to sf, fantasy or horror.

There were no awards in 1993 because it was used to establish the voting period for calendar years. The trophy takes the form of the monolith from the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968). In the winner list below, each category is for Spanish work only except where stated. [MV]
